10 Small Car Repairs You’re Neglecting

We all hate that pesky check engine light; the one we ignore, we hope will burn out or just go away because nothing is really wrong with the car anyway, right? We have to admit, even we’ve been on the guilty side of that thought process. Some days it’s just easier to look away from that little light and go about our business, but those days often turn into weeks or even months without these car repairs.

Eventually, the problem will become serious enough that it’s noticeable, and you might finally look into the issue or take it to the dealership to have it taken care of. Unfortunately, you’ll probably end up spending more than you would have if you just addressed the issue when that darn light first came on.

Your car’s check engine light is there for a reason, and though it can’t tell you what’s wrong, it’s there to let you know that something just isn’t right. It appears that as a society, we’re getting lazy with our cars. According to the car repair data site CarMD, repairs increased 6.7% overall last year, including a 13% uptick in labor costs and 3% increase in parts costs.

A recent Yahoo Autos article points out that, “CarMD has released its Vehicle Health Index and looked at what some of the most common ‘check engine’ light repairs were in 2013. The sad fact is that most expensive common repairs could have been prevented by simple, inexpensive, routine maintenance.”

According to CarMD, the top ten most common ‘check engine’ light repairs from last year include:

1. “Replace Oxygen Sensor(s) (O2S)”

2. “Inspect for Loose Fuel Cap and Tighten or Replace as Necessary”

3. “Replace Catalytic Converter(s) with new OE Catalytic Converter(s)”

4. “Replace Spark Plug Wires and Spark Plugs”

5. “Replace Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor”

6. “Replace Ignition Coil(s)”

7. “Replace Ignition Coil(s) and Spark Plug(s) if needed”

8. “Inspect Battery and Charging System and Repair/Replace as Necessary”

9. “Replace Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve and Clean All EGR Ports”

10. “Inspect For Faulty Vacuum Hose and Replace As Necessary”

The hard lesson: don’t wait. Routine maintenance and quick reactive care will help keep our cars in good condition for a very long time to come.

Mazda Celebrates 1 Million SKYACTIV Vehicles

Mazda is celebrating the production of one million SKYACTIV vehicles, which includes three separate models—the CX-5, the Mazda6, and the Mazda3. This milestone was achieved about two years and two months after production of the CX-5 first began back in November 2011.

SKYACTIV is the term Mazda applies to vehicles designed to offer superior environmental and safety performance without taking away from the driving pleasure that popularized the brand. It combines a suite of technologies and improved vehicle parts aimed at enhancing performance while reducing vehicle weight.

“On behalf of Mazda, let me express my gratitude to each and every person who bought one of our cars,” said Masamichi Kogai, Representative Director, President, and CEO. “With our undying challenging spirit and a great deal of hard work, Mazda will continue to make even more appealing cars that will enrich the lives of their owners, and help us build a strong and lasting bond with our customers.”

The next milestone is sure to arrive even more quickly, with production of the Mazda3 just beginning in Mexico, China, and Thailand within the last four months. It took a little over two years to reach one million. How long until the next million? Become part of the next record at Mazda of Lake Charles!

“Automobile Magazine” released their list of the top ten “All-Stars” for 2014, and of course they selected the 2014 Mazda 3 as one of said all stars. Even more exciting news to celebrate, this makes the 22nd All-Stars award earned by Mazda and the Mazda 3’s model fourth time receiving the award! Now, we here at Mazda of Lake Charles try not to toot our own horn, but we’ve got to tip our hats to the Mazda 3 for leading the charge in its segment.

Will the next Miata hit the New York runway?

With the New York auto show just around the corner, many Miata fans are wondering whether Mazda will make the grand appearance of the new Miata chassis or keep it under wraps for a bit longer. Although Mazda is playing their cards pretty close to the chest, an Australian Website , says that an insider informant has stated that the New York show will be the kick off location for the roadster’s PR campaign. reached out to Jeremy Barnes, USA PR Director, who neither confirmed nor denied whether the new chassis would hit the center stage. He also added “Just because you read it on the internet doesn’t mean you should repeat it”. However, he went on to say “It will be absolutely worth attending the New York Auto Show if you’re a Miata fan”.

Now this could mean he just doesn’t want to give the secret away, or he could merely be talking about the 25th anniversary celebration for the Miata that will be occurring during the auto show. We here at Mazda of Lake Charles are dying to find out, but right now, it appears only time will tell. It’s a good think the New York Auto Show is only a little over a week away!

Mazda Challenges Notion of Emissions with Ultra-Efficient Engines

While electric cars may not release any emissions themselves, the electricity they need to charge the battery, usually does. However, the carbon dioxide released in the electricity process is usually less than the amount emitted by a gasoline engine, but not for long.

Mazda is currently working on the next generation of its ultra-efficient engines, better known as SkyActiv. In a recent interview with Autocar, Mazda said that the SkyActiv-G Generation 2 engines could produce fewer well-to-wheel CO2 emissions than even pure electric cars.

SkyActiv technology has helped cement Mazda’s place in the market achat de viagra vente en ligne.

To make the new engines so efficient, Mazda will use a high compression ratio of 18:1 and will use homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI). HCCI makes a gasoline engine work in much the same way as a diesel engine, using piston compression instead of spark plugs.

According to Mazda, this could make the already efficient SkyActiv engines up to 30 percent more efficient in both fuel economy and thermal energy.

While Mazda is still working on the engine technology and does not have a release date, these more efficient engines could arrive in new Mazda cars before the end of the decade.

Mazda Makes 2014 Best Cars for Families

There is a common misconception that you have to buy a minivan or SUV in order to get a great family-oriented vehicle. You definitely wouldn’t think of owning a Mazda because they are just meant to be a stylish yet affordable alternative to other Japanese auto makers. However, all that is about to change.

Mazda took home the most category awards for any brand in U.S. News & World Report’s 2014 edition of “Best Cars for Families.” In fact a trio of Mazda’s most popular offerings, Mazda3, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5, took home a total of four awards.

According to a Mazda press release, Jamie Page Deaton, the managing editor of U.S. News Best Cars, said “The Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 were redesigned within the last two years and most reviewers agree that they’re among the top performers in each of their classes – proving that a family car doesn’t have to be boring to drive.”

The areas these 2014 Best Cars for Families were top performers in are the categories of “safety and reliability ratings, seating and cargo volume and the availability of family-friendly features.” Each of the winning Mazda vehicles, Mazda3, Mazda5 and Mazda CX-5, posted the highest composite score in its class – compact car, mid-sized sedan and compact-SUV, respectively.

The Adverse Effects of Smoking in the Car

This week at Mazda of Lake Charles, we want to address the admittedly touchy subject of smoking. Before you stop reading, rest assured; we aren’t going to launch into a lecture on the added health difficulties smokers face. However, we do want to discuss the effects smoking in the car has on non-smokers.

Many people assume the consequences of secondhand smoke are negated if windows are rolled down allowing the smoke to trail out of the car.

However, experts have discovered “that when you roll down the window either partially or completely, that can still be an environment equivalent to a smokey bar.”

Another effect of smoking in the car is third-hand smoke, “which is the residue that is left over. It’s actually a coat inside of the car. And that itself can be [especially] dangerous for children.”

Before you decide to light up or let someone else smoke in your car, consider the lasting effects that cannot be erased even when the smoke has blown out the window.

Mazda HAZUMI Concept Spells Out 2015 Mazda2

In a follow up to our last post, we have more information on the Hazumi concept!

It seems like just about everyone and their uncle is impressed and more than a little enamored with the new-look Mazda3 and Mazda6. For those among us who have wondered gee, when are we going to get the KODO-fied version of the sleek and svelte Mazda2, Mazda may have very well jut given you your best indication yet with the reveal of its HAZUMI concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

So what do we know about HAZUMI? Well, first thing’s first: it’s beautiful. It’s just about everything one would expect for a “Soul of Motion” take on the popular concept, with the same expressive lines, aggressive stance, and reworked fascia as its bigger brethren. Unique to the concept on display are oversized tires with stylish aluminum five spoke wheels

One of the most compelling details is that the HAZUMI houses a small-displacement clean diesel engine—the SKYACTIV®-D 1.5. The new Mazda diesel engine is said to provide for a thoroughly efficient and sporty performance, which we here at Lake Charles Mazda just love to hear. The only problem: the clean diesel SKYACTIV engine will likely be Europe-exclusive at first, making it hard to determine when we could expect to try the new powerplant out here in the states.

With the redesigned Mazda3 and Mazda6 a smash hit with customers and the looming specter of an all-new Miata bound for next year’s Chicago Auto Show, we can only assume we’ll be seeing the HAZUMI or something like it in Louisiana sooner rather than later—only then we suspect it will be called the 2015 Mazda2. When it arrives, stop out and test drive it for yourself!
