It was a great weekend full of Mazda racing at NOLA Motorsports Park as part of the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana. The races marked the third stop of the 2015 MX-5 Cup race season. The Saturday race was 45 minutes on the 13-turn 2.67-mile course and the field of Miatas dazzled the fans in spectacular fashion. In a hotly contested race, Dean Copeland of Bowie Maryland outdrove the rest by executing a pass of Patrick Gallagher’s Number 3 Miata on the final lap.
“On the last lap Gallagher had it, but caught the curb in Turn 10 and went four tires in the air. Luckily, I was able to sneak by,” said Copeland.
The 2015 MX-5 Cup race season is a part of the Sports Car Club of America Pro Racing circuit which involves drivers and teams from all over the country. The rules ensure the third-generation Mazda Miatas are competitive in capabilities by limiting similar engine performance, weight, and top-down configuration, which is part of the reason it makes the MX-5 races so entertaining.
