The Mazda MX-5 made its debut in Geneva but that’s not all it did. It inspired one of Mazda’s partners to create a sports car on the same platform. Fiat is stepping in with their Mazda MX-5 variant in the form of the Fiat 124 Spider.
The current Mazda MX-5 has two engine choices, 1.5L and 2L, that are capable of either 129 hp or 155 hp. Both of these engines can be routed through a six speed automatic or manual transmission. The vehicle is taking a step back to its roots too. Weighing in at 2,200 pounds, the 2016 MX-5 is a lightweight. In fact, it is the lightest since the first generation Miata.
Oh, and that is not all. Kudo Hidetoshi has put all the cards on the table. This generation Miata is planning to be around for about a decade, and we may see a Mazdaspeed version in the future But don’t take it from us, see what they are saying!
According to Kudo Hidetoshi, “We will have this ND-series model for maybe ten years, which gives us plenty of time make many variants. And yes, a turbocharged or MPS variant is one of the options we will definitely consider.”
We are most excited at Mazda of Lake Charles to see what the future holds for the Mazda MX-5!
