The all-new Mazda2 has won the 2014 Golden Steering Wheel award in the small cars category—one of Germany’s most prestigious automotive awards.
Each year, the best new car in each category is determined through a combination of reader voting and evaluations by a panel of judges, including automotive journalists. Because the magazine readers’ opinions are taken into consideration, it’s a surprise that any non-German car could win the award. In fact, the Mazda2 was the only Japanese vehicle to take an award in any category this year.
It’s also the fourth time a Mazda has won it—the last occasions being in 1985, 1989, and 1992. With its new SkyActiv technology and KODO-Soul of Motion design philosophy, the Mazda2 was just what the automaker needed to get back in the magazine’s radar—and score another award. It never came off our radar at Mazda of Lake Charles, though!
“It’s a great honor to receive this outstanding award for the all-new Mazda2 even before it arrives on the European market,” said Takahisa Sori, Mazda Managing Executive Officer. “It’s wonderful to see that the key features that define Mazda vehicles, such as exceptional design, the fun-to-drive factor, and excellent environmental performance, are being recognized in Germany as well.”
