With the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata on its way, the MX-5 Cup series will be getting a facelift as well. Beginning in 2016, a new Global Cup series will invite drivers from North America, Europe, and Asia to compete using the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata in various global series, which will come to a head at the Global Shootout where one driver will be crowned champion.
In addition to the champion title, that driver will also have the opportunity to spend a day with the TUDOR United States SportsCar Championship SKYACTIV prototype racecar.
“Since the first Mazda MX-5 Miata took the green flag back in 1990, the car has been the ideal platform for both veterans and rookies alike,” said John Doonan, motorsports director for Mazda North American Operations. “Because the MX-5 is inherently such a good car to drive, it is an ideal platform to learn basic and advanced race-craft, and this has made the professional MX-5 Cup series very successful to date.”
For the first time ever, the MX-5 racers will be sold from a single designated supplier, ready to hit the track.
To us here at Mazda of Lake Charles, it sounds like the beginning of an exciting racing season. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2016 for the racing to begin. Fortunately, Mazda didn’t make us wait that long to lay eyes on the fourth-gen MX-5 Miata.
